About the condition

What Is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger, medically known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is characterized by difficulty straightening your fingers — often with a popping sensation when you do manage to straighten them.

It is generally more common in women and requires a specialist for appropriate treatment.

What Causes Trigger Finger?

The primary cause is swelling of the flexor tendons in your hand — the cords that bend and straighten your fingers. When they swell, they can no longer glide smoothly through the tendon sheath. Repetitive hand use and certain health conditions raise the risk.

Diagnosis & treatment

How Trigger Finger Is Diagnosed & Treated

Diagnosis is determined through a physical examination and a discussion of your medical history. We progress from conservative care to surgery only as needed:

Treatment options we may recommend

  • Rest & a splint for the affected finger
  • Anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling
  • Steroid injections for smoother tendon movement
  • Surgery — open or minimally invasive endoscopic release

Recovery Timeline & Care Tips

Recovery focuses on reducing swelling and restoring smooth tendon movement. Non-surgical recovery may involve rest, a splint, and medication. After surgery, normal motion is usually restored right away — our "No Stitch" release is a popular minimally invasive option allowing for a quick recovery.
